November is Lovely at Color Me Mine

Hello everyone!

I hope you all had a safe and happy Halloween! Here at Color Me Mine we are revving up for what is sure to be a busy Christmas season. Nothing is more special than a handcrafted gift for your loved ones, and we are firm believers that the things we make today become meaningful treasures in the future. You don't need to have a fine arts degree to paint something beautiful, we are here to help you with painter-challenged-friendly techniques and help you create to your full potential.

This afternoon all the staff will be getting their head shots taken by Sarah Sovereign Photography, taking advantage of some of the leaves still hanging around in the back parking lot. (It doesn't sound glamorous, but trust us -- those big, bright yellow leaves will look awesome!) We are also getting excited about two giveaways we have coming up. One is for Cash Mob Chilliwack which is happening this November 24. Be sure to keep tuned in to our Facebook page for the details on how you can win tickets to a Chilliwack Chiefs game. Our second giveaway starts November 18th and details will soon be up on the blog and FB page on how you can win a beautiful handcrafted plate from our studio.

Do you have a VIP pass yet? VIP passes are $30 but last for three months and cover your studio fees for that time. This can allow you to work on a large project with bisque and come in as many times as needed in that time frame to work on it! After three visits your VIP pass is paid for, and it allows you to take advantage of some of our VIP deals. November 14th, Christmas bisque is 10% off for all VIP members. Just come on in and ask one of our studio team how you can sign up for a VIP pass!

Been a Little Busy...

Wow... it's been a month since we last blogged about anything happening in the Studio!  This is mostly due to the fact that our resident blogger, Sarah, was getting MARRIED!!

This beautiful photo was taken on the wedding day by Amy Nieto Photography based out of Portland, Oregon.  Amy was assisted on the wedding day by Linnea Castro of Linnea Paulina Photography, also from Portland, Oregon.  Amy and Linnea did an amazing job, and we can't wait to see ALL the photos.

Sarah's wedding was put together by the extraordinary Sheena and Karen from Simple Soiree Weddings & Events from Chilliwack, BC.
It's not always easy putting together a wedding, but these ladies made it look right down breezy!

Gitte from Bella Roma Florist located in Downtown Chilliwack, BC, did a gorgeous job with the flowers.

Bella Roma is the place to get all your flowers done, for any occasion.  I, myself, don't go anywhere else anymore.  They are always so fresh and divine.

You'd think once Sarah was finished getting married and all that jazz, she'd get her hitched butt back to work!  She did just that, by photographing our friend Emily's wedding just ONE WEEK after her own.  For those of you who only know our Sarah from working in the Studio, she's also a local photographer with Sarah Sovereign Photography.  Sarah does all our in Studio photos now, and is responsible for most of those very cool looking CMM - Chilliwack cover photos on our Facebook page.  Emily is a an employee of The Book Man and also runs her own theatre company, Bootstrap Theatre.
Sarah was assisted by Tanya Nelmes of Chilliwack's Bells & Babies Photography.

Congrats to Jamie & Sarah Finley on your marriage.  It was an honour to be a part of the incredible journey (that I'm still slowly recovering from...) and most importantly your very special day.  I love you both, and we can't wait for you to get back to work!

Now, for what's been happening in the Studio over the last month!
As you know, the 6th Annual Give a Dog a Bowl contest was running all Summer long.  We had some great entries this year.  Two of our regular customers, Karen Davies and Grant Hussey won the over 12 and under 12 categories, respectively, locally.  Both were then sent to CMM Head Office to be judged by Peanuts Worldwide.  And guess what?!  Grant's bowl for Tiger won the big prize!!  Grant will be receiving a Family Painting party here in the Studio in the near future, as well as a Peanuts Video Library.  Grant's bowl will be used in the advertising for the 7th Annual Give a Dog a Bowl contest next Summer!!
Congrats Grant!

Color Me Mine - Chilliwack also started booking parties online!  When you visit our website, and gander at the Party section, you will see a link "BOOK IT NOW!".  Click on that link and it will take you to our Partywirks page where you can book your party from your own home at any time of the day.

It's been a very busy Summer of 2012 here at CMM - Chilliwack!  We're looking forward to our even busier seasons: Fall and Winter!!  All of our Halloween stock is out and our Christmas stock will hit the shelves October 1!

See you soon!

Our Color Me Mine Studio Paint

Our underglaze paint is water-based, non-toxic & lead-free with true colours and a shiny fired finish. All are food safe, dishwasher and microwave-safe as well as regular oven proof.

Once you're finished painting your piece, we dip it into our blue glaze which is also water-based, non-toxic, lead-free, etc. It also coats completely, which gives a consistent, incomparable clear and even coating.

We offer a variety of colours, from rich reds to pale pastel blues and everything in between. Colours should always be applied light to dark -- don't start with black and put white over top, but gently apply your darker colours onto a lighter base.

Did you know that you can mix the underglazes? Mixing can be inconsistent and unpredictable, but you can try out some different mixes and get great results! The colours used in our header banner for the little bowls were mixed with a blend of #21 and #46, to attempt to create a more golden yellow.

For a lighter, watercolour look try one coat of paint, or even a wash of that paint. The result will be very watery and light. For the brighter pop, without little to no brush marks, do three coats of paint. When the paint becomes chalky and dry to the touch it's ready for it's next coat. Always apply even coats -- when paint starts to get globby it means too much has been applied and you're actually just moving paint around, rather than getting the coat application.

Our fun writers are great for adding text to your piece, or detailing fine lines. Each application equals three coats of paint, so you only need to go over it once! We do have smaller tips on hand as well, for that especially fine, thin writing.

Our bumpy doodles come in the standard colours of white, black, orange, red, green, purple, etc. They create a bumpy-to-the-touch surface after drying. These are super popular with kids, or can be used to create a fantastic texture.

Our element paint is $3.00 per colour, per ounce and can be applied over top of paint to create a metallic look. We have a variety of styles to choose from. We also have Jungle Gem paint as well. Jungle Gems react within the kiln and explode over the piece, creating a beautiful speckled result. These are also $3.00 per colour, per ounce. When using these specialty paints, just ask us and we can walk you through the process!

Our Foundation paint allows you to put colours on top of black paint, or darker colours. The colours that result have sort of a hazier, low contrast look but create a really lovely effect. They are $2.00 to use. Our Matte White and Matte Black paints are just that -- matte, not shiny. We can place a glaze over them if desired that create a sort of semi-matte effect.

Whatever colour you choose to do, your piece is sure to be beautiful because it's yours!

Hanging out in our sunshiney studio today

Working on projects all day here at Color Me Mine ... swing on by and work on a project of your own! What's going on behind the scenes? We're working on our first ever video tutorial, preparing for summer camps and starting an exciting project & tutorial about teacups. (Prepare for your brain to explode with the awesomeness of this project -- look for it sometime this summer!)

Have you "liked" our Facebook page yet? You may see the finished ceramic piece of someone you know in our Customer Piece's gallery and will stay up to date about fun events. July 13 is Everybody's A Kid Day -- mark it on your calendar for $5 studio fees, and don't forget Christmas In July starting July 15 - 21 with 25% off of Christmas bisque.

Stuck for a design idea? We are pretty in love with this idea of a stackable teapot and  teacup & saucer lamp. Check it out!

Photo Image Tutorial

Tonight I'm going to walk you through the process of adding a black and white image to your ceramic piece. This is an exciting and super personal technique you can apply and to do so you just need to bring in a high quality black and white image for us to scan and apply onto our special paper.

When you're painting your piece, leave a white square for the image to be placed. This is going to be our map for placing the final image on before we re-fire it.

The steps shown are steps that a Color Me Mine staff member will go through after your piece is completed and fired for the first time, and after your piece is printed out onto our special image paper.

Technique Tutorial: Peanuts Dog Bowl

Have you ever used NCR paper? We have a giant pile of it at our design center ... if you're looking to put a logo or other artwork onto a piece and are worried about freehanding it it's the perfect tracing solution. I'm going to walk you through how to use it to make your own pieces!

First, find your image on our design center computer by searching through google images. In this case, I'm going to use a Peanuts comic strip to illustrate the bowl. I'm using a chipped bowl for a sample piece. Print the image onto NCR paper and then cut it out and tape it in the place you want it to be. Begin to trace it with a pencil -- you'll know you're using the right side if you test the paper first on our pottery disc and it shows up as purple.

Once the image is taped, begin to trace firmly with a pencil.

Voila! You have a fully traced piece! I repeated the same technique to put the comic strip along the sides of the bowl.

First Day of Summer!

Summer has finally arrived in Chilliwack, and you know what that means??  It's time to sign the kids up for Summer Camp at Color Me Mine - Chilliwack!

The studio is offering several different themed camps for kids ages 6-12.  Is your kid mad for Angry Birds?  Does your daughter hoot for owls?  Are your boys leaping for frogs?  Then we have the perfect camps for them!

Camps are running Tuesday through Thursday in the months of July and August 2012.  We have two different types of workshops, our two hour and our four hour.  For $25 on Tuesdays and Thursdays, your kids can come and create a themed project over 2 hours with one of our Team Members teaching them new techniques that can be applied to other projects when they come back with the family.  On Wednesdays, for $50, your child not only gets the experience of our two hour camps, but they will also have extra fun doing crafts with the other kids in camp!

We are also offering a little something extra special for the older kids.  In the afternoon on July 18 and August 15, kids ages 10-13 can spend two hours painting slightly larger pieces and be taught how to use our Elements, Jungle Gems and Cascade glazes.  These classes are $50.

And for the little ones, up to the age of 5, how does a painting storytime sound?  On the mornings of July 18 and August 15, bring the toddlers in for storytime, a snack and to paint a tile based on the story.  Paint Me a Story is half an hour long and is $15 per child.

As an added bonus to our hardcore campers, on your 6th camp day you will receive a $15 Gift Card to be used on your next visit to Color Me Mine - Chilliwack.

Also - did you know that you can claim up to $500, per child, of your Summer Camp expenses on your taxes?  I know... it's amazing!  Children's Arts Tax Credit allows you to claim a maximum of $500 per child the fees paid in 2012 relating to the cost of registration or membership of your or your spouse's or your common-law partner's child in a prescribed program or artistic, cultural, recreational, or developmental activity.

So if you haven't signed your kids up for our Summer Workshops, you better do so soon!  Space is limited to 10 kids per camp day, all fees must be pre-paid.

Happy first day of Summer!
